Virginia and I went to the Safari Park today as pretty much our last tourist spot here in San Diego.. Needless to say, we were one of the very first ones in the park, which was awesome. Got to see a lot before everyone else, one of them being this guy.
Armed with my 70-300mm, I had to back up quite a bit, but I was able to get in real close to him, and pulled this one off. Of course, I wanted to blow out the background, so f/5.6 it was (shot in aperture priority)… Not much to say about it, but definitely one of my favorites from the set today.

Went to Tita Jackie’s house for dinner and drinking tonight.. (Last night, since I was too out of it to process and post this!) Either way, we had a pretty good time. Glad we got to spend time with Kristen and them one last time before we leave.
This shot was taken after my first three shots -haha, get it?- so I was very satisfied with myself when I saw that this came out pretty well. Don’t know why I shot at f/5.6 instead of 1.8, but oh well, I was drunk! The games of beer pong following this photo were pretty fun!

Went to Disneyland with the family today, and had a pretty good time! I told myself from the of the day that I didn’t want to take pictures of the same thing that thousands of people have taken, so I was really looking for details today.
Among the many that I took, I liked this one the most. Wanted to practice my panning, and here is the result! Taken at 1/20th sec at f/13.

Went to Tita Candy’s new house for a last get together with them before we leave for Spain… Wow, what a nice house. Absolutely beautiful, every part of it. My favorite of course was the kitchen; perfect setup. Even though I took a lot of pictures of the house itself, their dog JB was my main subject.
I had taken a few shots of him playing with his bone standing up, but I didn’t like the angle, since that’s what we see all the time, so I tried getting a little lower. (When I say a little, I was pretty much in prone taking this shot!) I wanted a significant amount of the background to be blurred, but his facial features to still be in focus, so I set the aperture to f/4.5, adjusted my shutter speed to 1/80th sec accordingly, and fired away.
A couple things that I could’ve done a little better was to back up to where I was able to get the rest of his paws.. Kind of just cut them off there (oops).
Either way, glad I got to practice taking closeups of this big guy without him tackling me or chewing my arm off. For such a big dog (80 lbs!) he’s pretty friendly!

Slacking.

Yeah, so I’ve pretty much been slacking on posting my 365 photos on here.. My fault. From here on out, unless I absolutely do not have internet access, I need to be posting up my photos. Lately, I feel like I haven’t been doing anything productive for my photography (or anything else, really) and I need to stop that.

I’m moving to a new command in a new country, and I want to be on top of my game when I get there. The only way I feel like I can do that is to have my personal life on track; photography, my running, and my reading.

With that being said, I’ll be sorting through my photos from the last couple weeks and will be updating my photography site shortly, so stay tuned. Also, I plan on not only just posting my pictures up here, but also explaining why I took the shot, and going over the basic EXIF data that accompanies it. Hopefully it’ll help newer photographers out by knowing my thought process prior to taking a shot.

Had our going away get together with the family today. Pretty good day overall, I’m glad we got to see everyone before our flight out next week. Gotta be honest though, best part of the day was talking to my cousins at the end.. Crazy how much closer you can feel to someone with just a few minutes of a conversation.
In any case, the sun was going down and led into golden hour, so I figured I’d try my hand at silhouettes.. Apparently I’m doing something wrong, because this shot turned out quite the opposite. Ended up dropping the exposure down a little bit, got down kind of low with my 10-24mm and started shooting.
Definitely like the end result!
